Alabama Relays set to begin

Some of the best athletes in the country will be running, jumping, and throwing in Tuscaloosa March 21 through March 24 at the annual Alabama Relays.

Alabama, fresh off a second place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, will welcome around 55 collegiate teams, 15 track club teams, and a large number of unattached competitors to what is always one of the larger and more competitive track meets in the South. In addition to the host team, the field includes eight other schools from Alabama as well as schools from throughout the country. Among these are the University of Wisconsin, Michigan State, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Iowa State, Drake, and SEC schools Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt.

Thursday and Friday will be devoted almost exclusively to the multi-events, with the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. The heptathlon consists of the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meter dash, long jump, javelin throw, and 800 meter run. Decathletes compete in the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meter dash, 110 meter high hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and finish off with the 1500 meter run. No individual events will take place on Thursday, and the 10,000 meter run will be the only individual race on Friday, beginning at 5 PM with the women's race, followed by the men at 5:40.

Saturday's schedule begins at 9 AM for field events, with the first running event at 10 AM. All individual running events - other than the 10,000 meters - will be contested on Saturday. Women's races include the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1500 meter run, 3000 meter run, 5000 meter run, 100 meter high hurdles, and 400 meter intermediate hurdles. The men will compete in the same events, except instead of a 3000 meter run there will be a 3000 meter steeplechase and the high hurdles are run over a 110 meter distance. The field events, both men's and and women's sections, will be spread over Saturday and Sunday. These will consist of the high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, and javelin throw.

All relay events will be held on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 PM (field events start at 9 AM). These will consist of the shuttle hurdle relay, 4X100 meters, 4X200 meters, 4X400 meters, 4X800 meters, 4X1500 meters, sprint medley relay (legs of 200 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, and 800 meters), and the distance medley relay (legs of 1200, 400, 800, and 1600).

Alabama's women's team is strong in the sprints and hurdles, while the men should be competitive in all running events. Complete information about the meet, including teams entered, schedules for each day, meet records, entrants in each event, and other data can be found at
