Williams named Freshman of the Year

TUSCALOOSA - University of Alabama point guard Mo Williams has been named basketball's best freshman by The Sporting News. The Jackson, Mississippi native who was a starter in every game for the Top 10 ranked Crimson Tide this season was its national Freshman of the Year.

Williams averaged 10.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists a game for the Crimson Tide this season. His first year of college ball has included a 33 points and 10 rebounds performance against Florida Atlantic in his first NCAA tournament game on March 14, as well as two other double doubles in points and assists.

Williams shot 85.7 percent from the free throw line and was also voted Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year by the league's head coaches.

Joining Williams on the All-Freshman Team were Texas point guard T.J. Ford, Notre Dame point guard Chris Thomas, Memphis shooting guard Dajuan Wagner and UConn center Emeka Okafor.

Alabama finished the season 27-8, producing the second-most single season wins in school history. It won the SEC regular season (12-4), went 17-0 at home, advanced to the SEC tournament's championship game and to the NCAA's round of 32.
