Statistics Comparison

Alabama's statistical advantage over Southern Miss was far greater than the final result on the scoreboard at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday night. Bama's margin of victory was 30-21, while the Tide had over double the yardage of the Golden Eagles.

Alabama had 24 first downs to 12 for Southern Miss. the Crimson Tide had 43 rushes for 140 yards, while the Golden Eagles had 23 runs for only 9 net yards. Bama completed 21 of 37 passes for 330 yards, while USM was good on 15 of 30 passes for 190 yards.

Alabama had 80 plays for 470 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per play. Southern Miss had 53 plays for 199 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per play.

Alabama lost one fumble and suffered one interception, while Southern Miss threw one interception. Two of the three turnovers–Bama's fumble and USM's interception–came in the final moments.

But the lack of turnovers didn't mean it was a well-played game. Southern Miss was penalized 11 times for 109 yards, Bama 10 times for 95 yards.

Alabama had a massive advantage in time of possession, 36:18 to 23:42. Bama converted six of 16 third down opportunities and two of two fourth down plays. USM converted only three of 11 third down plays and didn't attempt a fourth down conversion.

Individually, the spotlight was on Bama's two receivers with over 100 yards receiving. Tyrone Prothro had seven catches for 134 yards and D.J. Hall five catches for 130 yards with one touchdown. Kenneth Darby had three for eight, Ezekial Knight two for 18, LéRon McClain two for 12 and one touchdown, Matt Caddell one for 17, and Keith Brown one for 11.

Darby had 22 rushes for 79 yards, Tim Castille nine for 28 with two touchdeowns, Prothro two for 14, McCalin one for 13 (his first carry of the year), Glen Coffee rthree for 10, and Croyle six for minus four.

Brodie Croyle completed 21 of 37 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to his receiving and rushing yardage, Prothro had four punt returns for 34 yards and two kickoff returns for 97 yards. His total yardage was 279.

Jeffrey Aul had three punts for 87 yards, a 29.0 average, and Jeremy Schatz two for 70 yards, a 35.0 average.

Jamie Christensen was good on a 33 yard field goal and missed on a 41-yard try.

Defensively, Mark Anderson was in on six tackles with two and a half tackles for losses totaling 11 yards. Roman Harper was in on five tackles with a half sack for two yards. DeMeco Ryans was in on four tackles with two for losses totaling 21 yards. Others with four tackles were Charlie Peprah and Juwan Simpson. Wallace Gilberry and Matt Collins were on on three tackles each. With two tackles were Freddie Roach, Simeon Castille, Rashad Johnson, and Ramzee Robinson. Making one tackle were Demarcus Waldrop, Chris Keys, Jeffrey Dukes, Rudy Griffin, Jeremy Clark, Jeff Aul, Anthony Madison, and J.P. Adams.

Dukes had an interception.

Castille broke up two passes and Robinson one.

Anderson had two quarterback hurries, Gilberry and Roach one each.
