Statistics Watch

Alabama is right where it wants to be statistically in the only area that really matters. Bama is 3-0 overall and sitting atop the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a 1-0 league mark. Arkansas is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in SEC play. Here is how the two teams have done in various statisticfal categories.

It should be kept in mind that statistics can sometimes be misleading. And that's particularly true with only three games played. Alabama has not yet played a strong team, while Arkansas has faced a team that is being compared to one of the all-time greats in Southern Cal, not to mention that new bully of the SEC, Vanderbilt.

In scoring offense, the two are pretty close. Alabama is averaging 31 points per game and is fourth ikn the SEC and 41st in the nation. Arkansas is a point behind, 30 points per outing, and is fifth in the conference and 44th nationally.

In scoring defense, Alabama is allowing 14 points per game, fifth in the league and 22nd in the nation. Want to know what getting 70 rung up on you will do? USC got 70 on the Razorbacks and Arkansas is giving up 38.3 points per game, last in the SEC and 108th in the nation.

Arkansas led the nation in rushing the first two weeks of the season, and is still third in the country and first in the SEC at 291.3 yards per game. Alabama is third in the SEC and 27th nationally at 203.7 yards per game.

Bama is very good against lhe rush, first in the league and second nationally, allowing jujst 38 yards per game. The Razorbacks give up 199.7 yards per game rushing, 10th in the conference and 95th in the country.

Alabama is only fair passing, 231 yards per game which is eighth in the SEC and 57th in the nation. But Arkansas is poor, 147 yards, 1`2th in the 12-team SEC, and 102nd in the nation.

If there is one thing Arkansas is worse at than pass offense it is pass defense. The Razorbacks rank 103rd in ther nation (11th in the SEC) giving up 294.3 yards per game. Bama is pretty good on pass defense, allowing 166 yards per game, which is fourth in the SEC and 26th in the nation. >p> In total offense, Arkansas has a slight edge on Bama. The Razorbacks average 438.3 Yards per game, which is third in the SEC and 24th in the nation. Bama is right behind with 434.7 yards per game, fourth in the SEC and 25th nationally.

Bama has a considerable margin in total defense. The Tide gives up 204 yards per game, which is second in the league and fourth in the country. Arkansas ranks 11th in the league and 11th in the nation, allowing 494 yards per game.

(The surprising last place defensive team in the SEC? LSU, which gave up 461 passing yards and 560 total yards in its one game against Arizona State and ranks 117th in the nation in both categories.)

Turnover margin is considered an importrant statistic. Alabama is plus one on the year(two intrceptions and two fumble recoveries against one fumble lost and two interceptions allowed )and is fourth in the SEC, 43rd in the nation. Arkansas is minus two (three fumbles recoverred and three interceptions vs. four fumbles and four interceptions lost) and ranks ninth in the league, 82nd in the nation.

Third down performance is another key statistic and Alabama is only a bit better than Arkansas. The Tide has converted on 20 of 44 opportunities, 45.5 per cent, which is third in the league, and has held opponents to 10 of 35, 28.6 per cent, second in the SEC. Arkansas has made 12 of 27, 44.4 per cent, fifth in the SEC, and allowed 13 of 40 for 32.5 per cent, fourth in the league.

Arkansas has 68 first downs (43 rush, 23 pass, 2 penalty), which is second in the league and one more than Alabama, which is third with 67 (35-27-5).

Alabama is third in fewest first downs allowed at 35 (10-21-4), while Arkansas is 12th allowing 68 (19-39-10).

Alabama leads the SEC in time of possession, averaging 35:30 per game. Arkansas is in ffith place, averaging 30.03.
