Two Tiders Honored

Although most of the attention is on Alabama as a team, Crimson Tide individuals continue to reap awards. Two Bama players were honored as Southeastern Conference Players of the Week for their performances against Tennnessee last Saturday.

Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week and placekicker Jamie Christensen, who kicked the winning points for the second week in a row, was the Special Teams Player of the Week following the Crimson Tide's 6-3 win over Tennessee.

The victory lifted Alabama's record to 7-0, including 5-0 in SEC play. This week is homecoming at Alabama with the fifth-ranked Tide set to host Utah State at 2 p.m. CDT Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Ryans, a 6-2, 232-pound senior from Bessemer, led the Crimson Tide defensive unit with 11 total tackles, including one-and-a-half for losses. He also had a fumble recovery that led to Bama's first points and a pass interception to end the game.

Alabama's defense allowed Tennessee just 253 yards, only 109 on the ground. • Alabama's defense has allowed just one TD in its last three games.

Christensen, a 6-0, 178-pound sophomore from Norcross, Georgia, was good on a 34-yard field goal with 13 seconds remaining to give Bama the 6-3 advantage. Earlier in the game he had connected on a 33-yard field goal to give Alabama a 3-0 lead.

It was the second week in a row that a Christensen field goal won a game for Alabama. Against Ole Miss, he hit a 31-yard field goal as time expired to give the Crimson Tide a 13-10 win.

It was also the second consecutive week for Christensen to be the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Others honored as SEC Players of the Week are:

Syvelle Newton, wide receiver/running back/quarterback from South Carolina, for offense; Max Jean-Gilles, Georgia guard, offensive lineman; Claude Wroten, LSU tackle, defensive lineman; and Darren McFadden, Arkansas tailback, SEC Freshman of the Week.
