Bennett, Walter Camp's "Alumnus of the Year"

NEW HAVEN, CT – Former University of Alabama All-American and standout professional linebacker Cornelius Bennett is the recipient of the Walter Camp Football Foundation "Alumnus of the Year" award. Bennett joins a distinguished list of former "Alumni of the Year" winners, including Alan Page (Notre Dame), Archie Griffin (Ohio State), Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh), Herschel Walker (Georgia) and last year's recipient George Rogers (South Carolina).

The Walter Camp "Alumnus of the Year" award is bestowed on a worthy individual who has distinguished himself in the pursuit of excellence as an athlete, in his personal career and in doing good works for others. He must be an individual who has exhibited dedication and good moral conduct in achieving success. He must be a compassionate and unselfish person who contributes his time and assistance in helping to encourage and comfort fellow human beings less talented and less fortunate than himself. He must be an individual who takes pride in having been a Walter Camp All-American.

A two-time Walter Camp All-America selection, Bennett was a three-time All-SEC selection for the Crimson Tide. The school's Player of the Decade for the 1980's, Bennett served as Alabama's team captain in 1986 and amassed 287 career tackles and 15 sacks, 10 of which came in 1986. In his senior season (1986), Bennett won the Lombardi Award, SEC Player of the Year honors, and finished seventh in the final balloting for the Heisman Trophy. Bennett was also named to Walter Camp's All-Century Team. In 2005, Bennett was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Selected second overall in the 1987 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, Bennett played 14 years in the NFL and made five appearances in the Super Bowl. A five time Pro Bowler (1988, and 1990-1993), Bennett won the AFC Defensive Player of the Year award twice (1988 and 1991).

A member of the NFL National Alumni Steering Committee, Bennett is extremely active in the community, supporting various golf tournaments and fund-raisers for the Ronald McDonald House in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. For the last two years, Bennett has introduced the Walter Camp All-America teams on ESPN's College Football Awards Show.

Bennett and his wife Kimberly have three children (Auranna, Kimeko and Kivon) and reside in Golden Beach, Fla.

Bennett as well as all of the major award winners and members of the 2005 Walter Camp All-America team, will be honored at the organization's 39th annual national awards banquet on Saturday, February 11 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
