Texas Quarterback On Board

You never know what a Cotton Bowl appearance might do for you. Alabama playing in Dallas and beating Texas Tech may have had an effect on Bama being able to land the Texas 5A Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Greg McElroy of Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas.

Alabama signee Greg McElroy had 450 attempts with 321 completions for 4,600 yards passing, 56 touchdowns, nine interceptions, 700 yards rushing and 12 rushing touchdowns during his senior year. McElroy was named first team All-State and 5A Offensive Player of the Year. He broke the Texas state record with 56 touchdown passes.

Carroll won the Class 5A state championship with McElroy completing 21-31 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns and earning MVP.

McElroy was a verbal commit to Texas Tech before switching to the Tide after a scholarship was extended in January.

"The tradition at Alabama and the opportunity to play in the SEC were two reasons why I chose Alabama," McElroy said. "The tradition at Alabama is unmatched. Twelve national championships, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler and all the other great players who played on that same field is really special to me."

McElroy is on track to qualify.
