UA Swimmer Is SEC Breaststroke Champ

Alabama's Vlad Polyakov did it again at the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships being held in Knoxville, Tenn. this week.

Polyakov won his second consecutive 100 breaststroke title tonight, finishing a half second ahead of the field, posting a UT Student Aquatic Center record 53.55. Junior Hunor Mate' also finaled in the 100 breaststroke, taking fourth place with a 54.25.

Alabama's men are sixth with 283 while Auburn leads the meet with 722 points. On the women's side Alabama is in seventh place with 220 points while Georgia is in first with 729 points.

Junior Aaron Ashworth took third place for the second time at this championship after scoring 359.65 points off the 10-meter platform. Sophomore Chad Fritchl also scored off the platform, placing 12th place on 225.65 points. Alabama had three score in the 100 backstroke as freshman Chris Perry took 15th, sophomore Mike Jones took 17th and freshman Luke Dickson was 18th. Perry turned in a 50.27 while Jones went 50.63 and Dickson touched at 51.56. Senior Spiros Bitsakis scored in the 100 butterfly, taking 17th with a 49.36. Junior Tim Hansen scored in the 400 IM, taking 18th with a 4:02.47. Junior Apostolis Tsagkarakis was also 18th in the 200 freestyle touching at 1:40.41.

Perry, Polyakov, Bitsakis and senior Darren Erasmus combined to take sixth in the 400 medley relay with a 3:15.61.

On the women's side, senior Kathryn Hallquist finaled in the 100 backstroke, grabbing sixth place with a time of 54.98. Hallquist also led off the Tide's 400 medley relay, combining with sophomore Erin Sparks, junior Victoria Genova and freshman Vanessa Von der Heyde to take fifth place with a 3:45.68.

Individually Sparks scored in the 100 breaststroke when she took 11th place with a 1:03.86. Genova was 15th in the 100 butterfly, touching with a 55.25 while junior Melina Bassino was 18th at 56.02. Von der Heyde took 16th in the 200 freestyle with a 1:50.40.
