Alabama spent the final few minutes of Saturday's full pads practice in full pads live tackling 11-on-11 work. The mini-scrimmage went 44 plays for the first second and third teams combine.
Tide quarterbacks missed on their first four pass attempts, and the first completion of the day was a deep ball from the arm of third-team quarterback Jimmy Barnes to walk-on wide out Jonathan Lowe. The pass went for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Bama's running game was encouraging to say the least. Jimmy Johns had runs of 28 and 24 yards, while Roy Upchurch added runs of 14, 20 among his 39. There was one 16 yard play that no one saw, but some thought it might have been another Upchurch carry.
"It was a good read," Gray said. I already knew they had to go to the sticks and nine times out of 10 it's going to be an out. I just broke on the ball and it was there."
Tyrone King junior also made a good break on one out route breaking up a pass. Simeon Castille made a play on a deep pass by Wilson early in the scrimmage getting the break-up. Lionel Mitchell also had a break up, but it should have been an interception, as Guillon put the ball between Mitchell's numbers and it was dropped. Also, Sam Burnthall had two tackles in run defense, Justin Johnson had a tackle for loss and Zach Schreiber had a quarterback hurry.
Jamie Christensen hit two of three field goals at the end of practice, and Schreiber blocked the other.
Passing (Comp-Att-Yds) John Parker Wilson 3-8-36; Jimmy Barnes 1-2-66, TD; Marc Guillon 2-9-14, INT
