Spring Awards

When D.J. Hall got away from Simeon Castille and took a 33-yard pass from John Parker Wilson for the first touchdown of the game, Hall got his name in the minds of sportswriters who vote for the Dixie Howell Award as the Most Valuable Player in the A-Day game. When Hall came back on an underthrown ball and turned it into a 50-yard touchdown pass play, he had pretty much wrapped up the honor.

It was no surprise that D.J. Hall was the Dixie Howell Award winner on the final day of Alabama football practice, the A-Day Game. He finished the day with seven receptions for 136 yards.

For the second consecutive year the sportswriters selected the first team center as winner of the Dwight Stephenson Award as the outstanding lineman in the A-Day Game. Last year the honor went to J.B. Closner. This year's winner is Antoine Caldwell. It's difficult to judge the job of a center, but Caldwell had no bad snaps.

While those awards were voted in the press box late in the game, other Tide players were selected to historic spring awards that are determined by the coaching staff. They are:

Bart Starr Most Improved Quarterback: Freshman Jimmy Barnes

Johnny Musso Most Improved Running Back: Freshman halfback Roy Upchurch

Ray Perkins Most Improved Receiver: Junior wide receiver Matt Caddell

Ozzie Newsome Most Improved Freshman: Sophomore halfback Jimmy Johns

Bear Bryant Best Walk-On: Sophomore strong safety Rashad Johnson

Sylvester Croom Commitment To Excellence: Senior fullback Tim Castille

Derrick Thomas Community Award: Senior linebacker Juwan Simpson
