Speculation Turns To Wells' and Bama's Future

Alabama's baseball season ended Saturday night, but speculation about Jim Wells future, whether or not he will be offered and/or accept the vacant head coaching at LSU, will be the talk around the SEC in the coming days.

"Yeah, this isn't a great time," Wells said when asked about the possibility. "As I've said before, I haven't talked to anyone. It's kind of getting old, but we've been trying to focus on what we're supposed to do."

About LSU Athletics Director Skip Bertman, Wells said, "We're friends, but I talk to him once, maybe twice a year. I would tell you if I knew anything."

Alabama assistant Jim Gatewood has taken a high school coaching job in his native Texas. That move is thought to be unrelated to anything concerning Wells' future.

Wells did say that he thought the Major League Draft had been good to the Alabama baseball team. He projected Emeel Salem and David Robertson to return to the squad next season, since they were drafted in later rounds.

"Bryant Thompson signed with the Diamondbacks. He was a weekend-starter type pitcher we had signed, but I think we caught a break with the draft this year."
