Tiders Are All-America

OMAHA, Nebraska -- Alabama juniors Wade LeBlanc and Emeel Salem were named to the 2006 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Sporting Goods All-America team, it was announced today at the College World Series. LeBlanc, a pitcher, and Salem, center fielder, were second team selections.

Wade LeBlanc (Lake Charles, La.) finished the Alabama baseball season with an 11-1 record and 2.92 ERA in 18 starts this season for the Crimson Tide. He worked 129 1/3 innings and allowed 110 hits, 47 runs and 42 earned runs, with 43 walks and 128 strikeouts.

He set UA single-season records for innings pitched (129 1/3) and strikeouts (129) this season. He broke Lance Cormier's record of 129 innings pitched previously set in 2002. LeBlanc also broke the single-season strikeout record (118) previously held by Bobby Sprowl in 1977. He is also Bama's all-time strikeout leader with 334 career strikeouts.

A first-team All-SEC selection in 2006, LeBlanc was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year by SEBaseball.com after his junior season. He was also a second-team All-America selection by the NCBWA. LeBlanc was the 2004 National Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-America selection by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball in his rookie season.

Emeel Salem (Mountain Brook) had a banner year for the Crimson Tide. He led UA with a .356 (101-for-284) average, with two home runs and 32 RBI from the leadoff spot in the order. Salem also led UA with 67 runs scored and 36 stolen bases this season.

He ranked among the UA single-season leaders in at-bats (2nd, 284), triples (3rd, 7), stolen bases (3rd, 36) and total hits (8th, 101).

A First-Team All-SEC selection, Salem was also named to the College Baseball Foundation All-America team and was Second-Team All-American by Louisville Slugger and Collegiate Baseball. Salem was also a First-Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection and was named to the SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was also named to the 2006 SEC Good Works team for his community service.

The ABCA All-America Teams are collegiate baseball's oldest selections, dating to 1949. All Division I coaches have the opportunity to nominate and vote on these selections, which are initially compiled into eight All-Region teams. These teams are then finalized as the first, second and third All-America teams by the ABCA's NCAA Division I All-America and Coach of the Year Committee, chaired by Pat McMahon of the University of Florida. This year, the committee selected 58 players as 2006 ABCA All-Americans.

The ABCA National Coach of the Year is the coach of the national championship team, and will be recognized at the ABCA National Convention at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort over Jan. 4-7, 2007.
