Recruiting profile: Fred Sparkman

With the Tide staff continuing to recruit Alabama and surrounding states, the emergence of a middle linebacker prospect out of Columbia, Tennessee should be watched.

Fred Sparkman (6-1, 220 pounds) is an aggressive, sure-tackling machine who is technically sound, intense, and very knowledgeable of the game. As a junior he blasted his way to 162 tackles and 15 sacks.

Sparkman has run a 4.60 in the 40-yard dash, making him plenty fast to handle his position. His speed allows him to be involved in plays on either sideline, and he is physical enough to handle to plays aimed directly up the middle.

The pride of Columbia's Central High School, Sparkman is very active on the field, and his performance last season landed him as a finalist for the Class 4A Mr. Football Lineman Award. He has made All State each of the past two seasons along with all the Regional Teams.

Sparkman sports a 34-inch vertical jump. He is the cousin of former Central High and Tennessee Vols player, Ronnie Pillow.

He has attended camp at Florida this year, and planned to visit Alabama.

Sparkman bench presses 270 pounds, squats 405, and power cleans 270. He currently carries a 3.6 GPA and has scored 19 on the ACT.

He is being courted by Michigan, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, MTSU, and too a lesser degree, Tennessee. The Wolverines, Tar Heels, Tide and Gators lead the haul at this time. North Carolina, MTSU, and Vanderbilt have already offered.
