Not all the added players are new. Some have been with Alabama previously and some are fresh out of high school.
From a practical standpoint, additions are limited because there are not enough coaches or practice time to deal with extraordinarily large numbers and because Title IX issues come into play. (Gender equity involves thletics opportunities, not scholarships.)
Players who had been with Bama as recently as last spring and returned to the practice squad after the beginning of classes include:
Defensive back Austin Clifford, punter Justin Martin, tight end Patrick Burch, defensive back Courtney Moore, punter Patrick Eades, linebacker Joel Nix, wide receiver Cliff Murphy, defensive lineman Daniel Weaver, linebacker Cy Ellis, offensive lineman Layne Rinks, offensive lineman Joshua Curry, tight end Barrett Earnest, and tight end Daniel Wood.
Players who transferred to Bama prior to spring practice and must sit out this fall who have rejoined the Tide since August 23 are cornerback Tyrone King (previously at Grambling), running back Jonathan Lowe (Jacksonville State), and running back Max Martin (Michigan).
The expanded roster also shows offensive tackle sophomore Trent Davidson, who originally reported with the pre-season camp group of 105, but was given permission to leave camp.
Freshman linebacker Tucker Callahan is a new addition who took the long route from Fairhope to Tuscaloosa. He originally went to Oregon, where he was redshirted as a freshman last year. He'll sit out as a transfer then have three years of eligibility beginning in 2007. He's 6-2, 228.
Without knowing for sure, it seems to be a safe bet that Alabama junior walk-on linebacker Kenneth Vandervoort has been joined by his brother. One of the additions to the Crimson Tide football roster since the beginning of classes is freshman quarterback William Vandervoort, 6-3, 190. Both Vandervoorts played high school football at the Donoho School in Anniston.
William Vandervoort is one of two freshmen walk-on quarterbacks added to the roster. Also listed is James Denton, 6-1, 205, of St. Annes-Belfield in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Other new walk-on freshmen include:
Wide receiver Chris Pugh, 6-4, 185, Moulton (Lawrence County), linebacker Alex Benson, 6-2, 215, Trussville (Hewitt-Trussville), defensive back Hampton Gray, 6-2, 198, Tuscaloosa (Tuscaloosa County), linebacker Justin Dunn, 6-0, 225, Bessemer (Bessemer Academy), linebacker Mitch Ray, 6-0, 202, Birmingham (Oak Mountain), defensive lineman Lance Vickers, 6-4, 250, Athens (Athens), snapper Kevin Nash, 6-1, 195, Birmingham (Clay-Chalkville), placekicker Mike Sparks, 6-3, 200, Logansville, Georgia (Logansville), and punter Orion Hall, 5-11, 175, Marietta, Georgia (Walton).
Snapper Trey Chessner, 6-2, 250, of Starkville, Mississippi, is a new junior, a transfer from East Central Community College.
