Photo report: First practice day for newcomers

Derrick Pope was missing, studying for an important test. But twenty-four other newcomers worked out in the sun and rain, as the first full day of fall practice got underway.

Offensive lineman Grant Dickey (# 72) stretches at the start of practice. Dickey is the only scholarshipped offensive lineman among the newcomers, though center Cody Grammer of Tuscaloosa is on board as a walk on.

Cornerbacks Coach Chris Thurmond works with David Scott (#23) and Ramzee Robinson (# 17). A junior-college transfer, Scott was singled out for praise by Franchione following the evening practice.

Jason Bolding (# 87) and Marcus McKnight (# 82) pose following practice. Bolding transferred to Alabama from a California junior college, while McKnight signed scholarship players this morning. Both are candidates at wide receiver.

Dennis Franchione surveys the action during the morning practice session. The entire Tide staff is happy with the athleticism of the newcomers.

Though the varsity doesn't officially report until Wednesday, numerous Tide veterans stopped by to get an early look at the newcomers. Here, Charlie Peprah (right) surveys the action.

Quarterbacks Coach Les Koenning demonstrates how he wants it done. Looking on are Max Skembo (# 17) and Brandon Avalos (# 11).

Oblivious to the elements, D-Line Coach Stan Eggen (right) works in the rain with his group on the blocking sled. A steady downpour drenched the practice fields the latter half of the first session, but by the time drills were done the sun had come back out.
