Golf Tourney Begins

The Alabama golf team, ranked third in the nation, begins play Monday at its own Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament is 54 holes played Monday and Tuesday at Birmingham's Old Overton Club. The tournament is open to the public and no admission is charged.

Twelve teams are competing in the tournament, including Alabama, Auburn, UAB, Arizona, Brigham Young, East Tennessee State, Georgia State, LSU, Texas, Texas Tech, and Tulsa.

The five golfers, in order of seed, who will represent Alabama in the tournament are Mark Harrell, Matthew Swan, Gator Todd, Michael Thompson and Joseph Sykora. This will be Sykora's first tournament this season. Harrell, Swan, Todd and Thompson played in both previous events this fall, leading Alabama to the tournament championship in both events, the Carpet Capital Classic and the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.

Teams will play two rounds, 36 holes, on Monday and then the third and final round of 18 holes on Tuesday. First off the tee at 7 a.m. Monday will be, from hole No. 1, Georgia State, Texas Tech and East Tennessee State. At 7 a.m. from hole 10, UAB, LSU and Tulsa will tee off. The next wave will begin at 7:50. From hole No. 1 will be Alabama, BYU and Purdue, while Auburn, Texas, and Arizona tee off at that same time from hole No. 10.

Sykora will be the first off for Alabama at 7:50 a.m. CT. He'll be followed at 8:00 a.m. by Thompson; at 8:10 by Todd; at 8:20 by Swan; and then at 8:30, Harrell.

Second round play will begin at noon.
