Photo report: First day in full pads

Tuesday morning was the Alabama squad's first opportunity to dress out and practice in full pads.

Santonio Beard breaks into the clear after taking the handoff. Practice observers have noted that Beard seems stronger and has improved his pass-catching skills.

Anthony 'Bear' Bryant abuses a blocking sled. Most lineman aren't completely ready physically until their third season on campus, and Bryant has looked good in practice.

Under heavy duress from the onrushing defender, Spencer Pennington just gets the pass off. Pennington is currently listed third string on the quarterback depth chart.

Senior Waine Bacon (#24) covers Thurman Ward (#1) during pass drills. Ward just switched from cornerback to receiver last spring, but he's showing promise at the position.

Antonio Carter (#2), Ahmaad Galloway (#29), Brodie Croyle (#12) and Dre Fulgham (#3) relax under the tent during a break from practice. Note the outdoor air conditioning units in the background, which normally are used on the sidelines during games.

Greg McLain (left) and Clint Johnston (right) walk off the practice field after the morning session. Coach Franchione said last night that he didn't see a redshirt year for McLain, but rather the true freshman should see playing time this season at fullback.

Strongside linebacker Juke King breaks free during pass-rush drills. King is running third string behind Cornelius Wortham and Jason Rawls.

Ahmaad Galloway breaks a tackle at the line of scrimmage. The senior tailback is in excellent shape and poised for his best season yet.
