Award Worthy

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A trio of University of Alabama football players were named to the 2006 All-Southeastern Conference Coaches team, the league office announced Tuesday.

Junior defensive back Simeon Castille, sophomore center Antoine Caldwell and junior wide receiver DJ Hall were recognized by the league's 12 head coaches for their performances during the 2006 season.

Castille was the Crimson Tide's lone First-Team All-SEC representative. He started all 12 games and ranked fourth on the team with 65 tackles, including a team-best 43 solo stops. Castille was responsible for eight turnovers this season as he led the Crimson Tide with five interceptions and three fumbles recovered. The eight turnovers forced and five interceptions were also among the SEC leaders.

This is the second All-SEC honor in as many days for Castille. He was the Crimson Tide's lone representative on the 2006 Associated Press All-SEC team released on Monday night.

Caldwell was a second-team All-SEC pick after starting all 12 games for the Crimson Tide this season at center. He played 746 total snaps, the second-most of any offensive player and fourth most on the team. Caldwell was second among UA's offensive lineman with 58 knockdown blocks, including a season best eight against UL Monroe and Florida.

Hall is one of the nation's premier receivers. In 11 games, he caught 57 passes for an Alabama single-season record 1,014 yards and five touchdowns. Hall and David Palmer are the only two UA receivers with 1,000 or more yards in a season. Palmer had exactly 1,000 yards in 1993. In addition, Hall set Alabama records this season for most career 100-yard games (11), most 100-yard games in a season (7) and most consecutive 100-yard games (5).

The SEC Office will announce the league's individual awards on Wednesday, December 6, while the 2006 Freshman All-SEC team will be released on Thursday, December 7.
