Tide Softball Moves Up To No. 1

The Alabama softball team expected to be involved in a Number One vs. Number Two series this weekend at Tennessee, but it may be a bit of a surprise to the Crimson Tide that it is Bama ranked first in the nation this week.

The Alabama softball team of Coach Patrick Murphy goes to Knoxville for a three-game series this weekend and the matchup will be the best in the nation this year. It will be number one ranked Bama against number two Tennessee.

Alabama and Tennessee meeting on the final weekend of the year was expected to be big. For much of the season the Vols have been ranked number one and for much of the year the Crimson Tide has been in the top three.

Last weekend Bama swept Kentucky and Tennessee lost two of three games to LSU. When the new ESPN.com/USA Softball top 25 poll was released this week, Alabama was number one and Tennessee was number two.

The teams will meet in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. EDT Saturday, then complete the series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

LSU, which is fourth in the latest poll, is tied with Alabama and Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference. All three teams have 21-4 league records. And LSU took two of three from Alabama earlier in the year.

While the Alabama-Tennessee series is the headline series in both the SEC and in the nation this weekend, LSU will be at Georgia with an excellent chance to finish as SEC champion while Bama and Tennessee knock heads.

Alabama, which has a 17-game winning streak, improved to 50-4 last weekend. Tennessee is 51-4. Oklahoma is in third place with a 49-6 record and LSU is 48-8 overall.

Alabama got 17 of the 20 first place votes with the Vols, Sooners, and Tigers all getting one first place vote each.

Bama had 489 points, Tennessee 470, Oklahoma 456, and LSU 453.

The rest of the top ten was 5. Arizona, 6. Texas A&M, 7. Baylor, 8. Northwestern, 9. Arizona State, and 10. Michigan.
