Tide Coaches In Golf Tourney

A trio from University of Alabama athletics are scheduled to play golf together with PGA Champions Tour player Hale Irwin on Thursday at 9 a.m. CT in the Regions Charity Classic Pro-Am at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge in Hoover.

Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban, Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried, and Athletics Director Mal Moore are paired with Hale Irwin.

Irwin had 45 victories on the PGA Tour and has won 20 times on the Champions Tour, including the 2001 Regions Charity Classic (formerly the Bruno's Memorial Classic).

Other sports celebrities with Alabama ties scheduled to participate on Thursday are former UA and NFL quarterback Jay Barker, former Crimson Tide All-America and NFL star linebacker Cornelius Bennett, and former Tide Basketball Coach Wimp Sanderson. Sanderson is in a pairing with Syracuse Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim and UAB Football Coach Neil Callaway (a University of Alabama graduate and former UA assistant coach).

Others of interest listed as playing in the pro-am on Thursday are Charles Barkley, Tim Brando, Drew Brees, Al Del Greco, Taylor Hicks, Bo Jackson, Phil Niekro, Steve Spurrier, Pat Sullivan, Tommy Tuberville and Stan White.

The 16th Annual Regions Charity Classic is a stop on the Champions Tour and will include a field of more than 78 Champions Tour players, including Irwin, when play officially begins on Friday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Ross Bridge, a par 72 with a 7,473 yards layout. The event includes a purse of $1.6 million. It has raised more than nine million dollars for local charities over the last 15 years. Brad Bryant is the tournament's defending champion.
