In-State Star Chooses the Tide

Courtney Upshaw, a defensive end from Eufaula High School, took a trip to Alabama today, and he gave the coaching staff some good news.

"I committed to Alabama," said Courtney Upshaw. "I went up there today. I got to meet with the coaches and tour the facilities while I was there."

With offers from Alabama and Auburn among others, what helped tip this battle in the Tide's favor?

"I just always knew I wanted to go Alabama growing up, so I wanted to go ahead and commit today when I was there. That was my second time up there."

Upshaw isn't one to make a lot of noise off the field, but he sure makes it on the field.

"I think it's how hard he plays," said Eufaula Offensive Coordinator John Gilmore when asked what made Upshaw a special prospect. "When the play goes away from him, he still goes full speed. He makes a lot of plays on the opposite side of the field. I think when coaches see him on film, they like that, and they like that he's good on the line and in the open field. He's real athletic."

Upshaw helped lead his team to the State Championship game last year on the way to recording 96 tackles and six sacks. The three sport standout is ready to focus on just one on his way to Alabama.

"I also had two interceptions; I returned one of those for a touchdown. I did play basketball and baseball, but I'm going to stick with just football next year. We start workouts for the summer on Monday."

With his recruitment behind him, Upshaw can help stay focused on getting his Eufaula team back to the State Championship before he starts gunning for more championships in Tuscaloosa.
