Tide Men's Golf Team Moves Up

After winning the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate with a school-record 42-under par finish on October 9, Golfweek has selected the No. 2 ranked University of Alabama as its Men's Team of the Week.

"The Crimson Tide won the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate for the second year in a row Oct. 9, turning in rounds of 270-268-272 for a 42-under 810 total," writes Golfweek of the award winners on its website, www.golfweek.com . "The Crimson Tide, led by co-medalist Mark Harrell at 15-under 198 (66-64-68) won the team the title by 17 shots."

Alabama's win helped move the team from No. 4 to No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Tide senior Michael Thompson, the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the Golfweek/Titleist Men's Amateur Rankings, is No. 4 in the collegiate men's individual rankings. His teammate, junior Matt Hughes, ranks No. 19. Joining them among the Top 50 individual rankings is Harrell at No. 41. Harrell, incidentally, ranks No. 15 in the amateur rankings. The amateur rankings are based on specific finishes in designated tournaments over the past 52 weeks.

After playing four tournaments between September 4 and October 9, Alabama's golfers are taking a brief break from competition until their final fall event, the October 28-30 Callaway Golf Match Play championships in Lake Oconee, Ga. Jay Seawell's Crimson Tide has played four tournaments this fall and has won half of those, winning the Jerry Pate and the Carpet Capital Collegiate, both of those events for the second year in a row. Alabama came in second in its international season opener, the Topy Cup in Japan, and it finished fourth at the Golf Week/Ping Preview.
