BamaMag.com Southern Miss by the Numbers

Southern Miss (2-1) comes to Tuscaloosa Friday night (11/23/07) to take on the Tide (2-1) at 7:00pm CST. The Golden Eagles have posted wins over Belhaven and William Carey with the lone lost coming at California.

Southern Miss's starting five has been a consistent four guard line-up with Alabama native Courtney Beasley, Jeremy Wise (leading scorer at 15.3 points per game), Sai'Quon Stone, Craig Craft and seven footer Gijo Bain.

Surprisingly with that line-up, the Golden Eagles have only attempted 43 three pointers. Their shooting percentages are 47.5-percent from the floor, 34.9-percent from the arc, and 62.3-percent from the free-throw line as a team.

Southern Miss is averaging 79 points, 13 assists, and 13.7 turnovers per game offensively as a team. Defensively, the Golden Eagles average 45.7 rebounds, five steals, and six block shots per game as a team.

Even though Southern Miss poses more size on their roster than the three previous opponents, Bama will still have the size advantage if the Golden Eagles continue with that small line-up. Look for the Tide to continue pounding the ball inside to Hendrix or driving the lane with their athleticism.

Bama's point guard spot will need to demonstrate being a scoring threat to keep Southern Miss from packing in a zone. Hitting consistently from the three point line will keep the Tide's potent inside game from being choked off.

Defensively, Alabama should show a tough "in-your-face" 2-3 zone for most of the game as the Golden Eagles are not much of a threat beyond the arc. Bama should also get back on track by showing their rebounding dominance as for the first time they were out rebounded in the loss to Belmont.

This game may not be as fast paced as previous games, but look for the Tide to hold off the opposition in a hard fought battle.
