Tide Softball Gets Another High Mark

The University of Alabama softball team will open its 2008 regular season on Feb. 8 holding top-five rankings in both national softball polls after the Crimson Tide earned the No. 4 ranking in the ESPN.com/USA Softball preseason top 25 poll released on Tuesday. Alabama was also ranked fourth on the NFCA/USA Today preseason poll released last week.

Alabama enters the season as the highest ranked Southeastern Conference team in both national polls. LSU and Tennessee each earned top-10 rankings in one or both polls, with the Lady Vols coming in as high as No. 6 on the NFCA/USA Today poll. Florida was also included in the top 25 of both polls.

Several of the Tide's non-conference opponents were ranked highly on the ESPN.com/USA Softball top 25, with Northwestern coming in at No. 6, DePaul at No. 8, Washington at No. 14 and Georgia Tech at No. 18.

Defending national champion Arizona was at the top of both preseason polls, with Arizona State and Texas A&M rounding out the top three.

Alabama opens its regular season on Friday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. when the Tide hosts instate rival South Alabama as a part of the Hampton Inn Bama Bash. Alabama faces Purdue in the 5 p.m. game later that day.
