Alabama Will Play Auburn In Montgomery
Alabama and Auburn will play one game in 2009 and one game in 2010.
"We are very happy to bring these prestigious programs back to Montgomery," said Biscuits owner Sherrie Myers. "In addition to being a wonderful and entertaining game, the City of Montgomery is pleased to reinstate a great tradition."
The two-game series will take place Tuesday, March 10, 2009 and Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Riverwalk Stadium, the home of the Class AA Montgomery Biscuits. Alabama will be the home team in 2009, while Auburn will be the home team in 2010. Both games are tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m. starts and both teams have agreed to a rain date in case of inclement weather.
"We are very excited to renew our series with Auburn in the city of Montgomery," Alabama Coach Jim Wells said. "All the games in Montgomery have had tremendous success and the crowds have been great. Riverwalk Stadium is one of the top baseball facilities in our state and we are excited about showcasing Crimson Tide baseball to the many loyal fans throughout the state of Alabama."
This will be the first time Alabama and Auburn have met in a non-conference regular season game since the 1996 season. The Crimson Tide and Tigers met annually throughout state during the 1980s and 1990s, including a seven-game series at Montgomery's Paterson Field from 1990-96. Alabama won four of those seven meetings, including a 2-0 decision in the last meeting in Montgomery on April 2, 1996. In 1993 and 1995, the Tide and Tiger's played one SEC game at Paterson Field. Auburn won 11-3 in 1993, while Alabama beat top-ranked Auburn 10-5 in 1995 in front of a then state-record 8,543 fans on May 12, 1995.
Alabama has compiled a 5-7 (.417) all-time record in the city of Montgomery, dating back to its first game against the Cincinnati Reds during the 1918 season. The Crimson Tide has also played Vanderbilt (1924), Georgia Tech (1926) and Troy (2007) in the capital city.
After an early booking period as a special benefit to season ticket holders of the Biscuits, Tide and Tigers, tickets to the MAX Capital City Classic will go on sale to the general public this November. Ticket information and other game-related information is available at the game's website, www.maxcapitalcityclassic.com.
