Tide Athletes Excel In Graduation Rate
"The academic performance of our student-athletes continues to be solid, as exemplified by the Graduation Success Rate," said Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore. "This is evidence of the work of our athletic academic support staff, combined with the leadership of our president and the work of our excellent faculty to emphasize academic success to our student-athletes. It also is a credit to the dedication of our student-athletes and the commitment of our coaches. Our faculty plays an integral part in the academic success of our student-athletes. The faculty is to be commended for the outstanding job they do."
Seven of Alabama's 20 intercollegiate athletic programs in existence at the time – men's golf, women's cross country/track and field, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's soccer, women's softball, and women's tennis – achieved perfect scores of 100. Eleven of Alabama's programs recorded a GSR score of at least 80 with nine of its teams having a GSR score 90 or higher. Women's rowing is not included in this survey as it did not become a scholarship sport at UA until 2006.
The GSR measures graduation rates at Division I institutions and includes transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows institutions to subtract student-athletes who leave their institutions prior to graduation as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete had they remained.
The NCAA GSR and the Academic Success Rate (ASR) were developed in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflected the mobility among college students today. Both rates improve on the federally mandated graduation rate by including students who were omitted from the federal calculation.
UA Student-Athletes' Academic Success Highlights
*The University of Alabama ranks first in the SEC and tied for third nationally among Division 1A institutions in ESPN the Magazine's latest rankings of Academic All-American selections since 2000. UA is seventh nationally when all NCAA divisions are included.
Most AAA Selections since 2000 (Division 1A)
University of Notre Dame – 76
University of Nebraska – 76
Penn State University – 52
University of Alabama – 43
North Dakota State University – 43
*For the most recent year of graduation data (students who entered the University in 2001) the Alabama football team posted a graduation rate of 80 percent. Because the graduation rate is limited to students who graduate within six years after initial enrollment, two other football players who went on to play professional football and then came back to graduate are not included in this number as graduates. If you include those two players, 93 percent of the players from that year graduated.
*For the most recent year of graduation data (students who entered the University in 2001), men's basketball posted a graduation rate of 67 percent. The rates for both football and men's basketball for that year are higher than the University's overall graduation rate.
*In the NCAA's latest Academic Progress Rate report, released in May 2008, a dozen of UA's varsity athletic teams earned a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) score higher than the national average, including two squads (women's cross country and rowing) that scored a perfect score of 1,000. All 21 Crimson Tide teams were once again above the national cutoff standard of 925.
*Academically speaking, UA student-athletes had the best fall semester on record in 2007, achieving a combined grade-point average (GPA) of 3.04. Some 134 student-athletes had over a 3.5 GPA, including 48 who had a perfect 4.0. Forty-one student-athletes in three sports (football, women's soccer and volleyball) were named to the SEC's Fall Honor Roll.
*UA golfer Joseph Sykora was selected as the male recipient of the 2008 Boyd McWhorter Award, given to the top male student-athlete of the year.
