Top-Ranked Bama Beats Notre Dame
"We were able to put together some timely hits tonight," Alabama Coach Patrick Murphy said. "Kelley Montalvo had a nice game at the leadoff spot, making things happen for us. It was great to get back and play in front of the home crowd."
After scoring one run in the first, the Crimson Tide busted the game wide open with a five spot in the second and added four more in the fourth to run away from Notre Dame (0-1). Montalvo was the catalyst for the Tide, scoring the first run of the ball game as she drew a leadoff walk and then quickly stole second. After getting moved over by Jennifer Fenton, junior Charlotte Morgan brought her home on a sac fly to right.
In the second the Crimson Tide took advantage of two Notre Dame errors. All five runs were unearned. Freshman Cassandra Reilly-Boccia supplied the punch with a double to right-center that brought in three runs.
In the fourth, Morgan struck again with a RBI single down the left field line. Kellie Eubanks then knocked in Lisa Elizondo, who pinch ran for Morgan, on a double to right center. Amanda Locke then followed with a line shot that easily cleared the center field wall.
The Fighting Irish were able to score a run to open the contest but sophomore hurler Kelsi Dunne kept them in check the rest of the way to improve to 2-0 on the season. Dunne again went the distance, allowing two hits while fanning three.
Freshman Cassandra Reilly-Boccia drove in three runs while Locke drove in two and scored twice. Montalvo scored twice and drew two walks while Fenton also scored twice. Morgan continues to pur in the RBI as she added two more to her ledger.
Alabama will continue BAMA Bash play Saturday against Notre Dame at 1 p.m. CDT. The Fighting Irish will start things off tomorrow against the East Carolina Pirates at 11 a.m. ECU defeated Wisconsin in the opener by the score of 2-1.
