Matthes National Player Of Week
Matthes was also named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. He earned National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week honors on Monday, March 2, after leading the Tide to a pair of wins over both Nicholls State and Illinois-Chicago.
Matthes had another solid week in leading the Alabama Crimson Tide to a series win over top-ranked Georgia to open Southeastern Conference play. In five games, he hit .450 (9-for-20) with four home runs and 11 RBI.
"We have a good hitting lineup and Matthes just happens to be our best guy right now who hits a home run all the time," Alabama Coach Jim Wells said. "He is having a really good year and has carried our team. He has worked hard to become a real good player."
He homered in four of the Tide's five games last week and continues to lead the nation with 13 home runs in 16 games this season. He has homered in 11 of UA's 16 games, with multi-homer games against SE Missouri State (Feb. 22) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (March 7).
In the series win over Georgia, Matthes hit .385 (5-for-13) with five runs scored, two home runs and six RBI in leading the Tide to its fifth straight series win over the Bulldogs. He went 3-for-5 in the series opener with three runs scored and three RBI. He also added one double and one home run. He hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the fourth inning of the series finale to give the Tide an 8-7 lead. UA trailed 7-0 in the second inning before Matthes' 13th home run put his team in the lead.
He also homered in non-conference games with Auburn and Samford last week. He was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run at the Capital City Classic on Tuesday and then added three hits, including a two-run home run against Samford the next night.
For the season, Matthes is hitting .444 (28-for-63) with 13 home runs and 33 RBI in 16 games. He leads the Tide in eight offensive categories, including average, runs (27), hits, home runs, RBI, total bases (73), slugging percentage (1.159) and stolen bases (6-for-6).
