Jung, Rogers SEC Scholar Nominees
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes.
The Southeastern Conference will name the 2009 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 6 in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day.
Jung, a senior from Suwanee, Ga., has earned a 3.69 grade point average, majoring in Marketing. He is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll (2009 Spring Honor Roll announced later in spring) and a four-time member of the Dean's List. He attended the University of Arkansas as a freshman and sophomore before transferring to Alabama.
Last year, Jung earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete Award. He also has earned the U.S. Steel Foundation Scholarship in Supply Chain Management, Annie Pride Tompkins Moore Scholarship, Harold Chitwood-Gold Kist Scholarship, Commerce Executive Society Entrepreneurial Scholarship, Dr. George H. and Jane Denny Scholarship, Crimson Achievement Scholarship and the Elton B. Stephens Management and Marketing Scholarship at Alabama.
In the Fall 2008 season, Jung was the only Alabama player to amass double-figure singles wins. He won six matches in three days to capture the Baylor Invitational Flight B Singles Championship. Last season, as a junior, he was 11-8 in singles competition and 4-4 in doubles throughout dual-match play.
Jung is a member of the University of Alabama Korean Student Association and has also participated in various charities including Walk to Defeat ALS, Halloween Kids Day, conducting free tennis clinics for kids, and serving as a Sunday School teacher at his church. He also has collected clothes for a sister church in Nicaragua.
Rogers, a senior from Dacula, Ga., has earned a 3.877 grade point average, with a major in Elementary Education. She has been a member of the Dean's List for five semesters, a member of the President's List for three semesters and a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll (2009 Spring Honor Roll announced later in spring).
She was an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Award winner in 2007 and a nominee to the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in 2008.
An outfielder for the Crimson Tide, she was a first-team All-America in 2007 and 2008 and a second-team All-America in 2006. In 2006, she was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and has been on USA Softball's Player of the Year Watch List for three seasons.
Rogers has been a member of the Alabama Student-Athlete Advisory Committee since 2006 and is its president this year. She has been active in community service throughout her time on the Capstone. She has been involved with Project Angle Tree, Easter Seal Walk and Hurricane Katrina relief. She has spoken to elementary school children, visited retirement homes and collected canned goods for food banks. In 2007, Rogers was a member of the SEC Community Service Team.
