Big official visit weekend set

With most of their 18 slots already filled, Alabama's first big recruiting visit weekend will be as much of a "get acquainted" session as anything else.

But a few athletes will be on hand left to persuade.

Though the numbers will probably change somewhat before Friday, at this point Head Coach Mike Price and the new Tide staff will welcome 14 prospects to campus, nine of whom are publicly committed to Alabama.

The Tide can only bring in 18 new scholarshipped athletes this fall, and 13 of those spots are already taken. Committed athletes scheduled to trip to Tuscaloosa this weekend include:

Eric Gray

Matt Caddell
WR/KR, 5-11, 172
McCalla HS, McAdory, AL

Tim Castille
RB, 5-11, 220
Briarwood Christian HS, Birmingham, AL

Chris Felder
DB, 5-11, 170
Wilcox Central, Camden, AL

Eric Gray
CB, 5-11, 180
Trinity-West Morgan HS, Trinity, AL

Mario Lane
TE/DE, 6-5, 250
Carver HS, Montgomery, AL

Dominic Lee
DT, 6-2, 290
Huffman HS, Birmingham, AL

Justin Moon
OL, 6-6, 295
Guntersville HS, Guntersville, AL

Eric Packer
RB/Ath, 5-9, 184
Wilcox Central HS, Camden, AL

Travis West
OL, 6-4, 275
N.E. Jones HS, Laurel, MS

Daniel Brooks

With just a few grants left to fill, Price and his assistants have been able to concentrate their efforts on just a few targeted recruits. Several talented athletes seen as excellent possibilities to sign with Alabama will be on campus this weekend, including:

Daniel Brooks
LB, 6-3, 230
Jackson Central-Merry HS, Jackson, TN

Mitchell Thomas
LB, 6-2, 215
Smiths HS, Smiths, AL

Michael Hill
DL, 6-3, 275
Smiths HS, Smiths, AL

At one point both Thomas and Hill had committed to the Tide. It's a strong possibility that the two high school teammates will end up attending the same college. Brooks has maintained a strong interest in Alabama throughout the recruiting process, despite strong pressure to stay in state and attend Tennessee.

Demarcus Waldrop

As of Tuesday their plans had not been confirmed, but two outstanding all-around Alabama prep athletes will probably visit Tuscaloosa this weekend:

Tyrone Protho
Ath, 5-10, 175
Cleburne County HS, Heflin, AL

Demarcus Waldrop
SS/LB, 6-0, 195
Pinson Valley HS, Pinson, AL

Protho is one of the most exciting offensive players in the state, but he may be forced to begin his career at a junior college. Waldrop is thought likely to commit to Alabama if offered.
