Former Tide Golfer Has Good Start

Former Alabama golfer Steve Lowery took the early first round lead in the Buick Open Thursday with a nine-under-par round of 63. The tournament is being played at the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan.



Steve Lowery, who played at Alabama 1980-84 for Coach Conrad Rehling, birdied the first four holes and was seven-under-par at the turn. He had three birdies and one bogey on the back nine for a 29-34—63.

The tournament continues through Sunday.

Lowery, a native of Birmingham, has been on the PGA Tour since 1988 and has official winnings of $15 million. He won the 1992 Tulsa Open, the 1994 International, the 2000 Southern Farm Bureau Classic, and the 2008 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Buick Open has a purse of $5 million with $900,000 to the winner.
