Here's What You've Been Waiting On

Alabama released its official depth chart for the opening football game against Virginia Tech on Monday, and there were no real surprises. All starters from last year were listed as starters in the same positions this year with one very minor exception, and most of the new listed starters rank as little or no surprise.

Alabama will play Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. central time) on Saturday in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is being nationally televised by ABC.

Alabama has three returning starters on offense and all three were in the positions they started last year – Julio Jones at wide receiver, Mike Johnson at left guard, and Drew Davis at right tackle. The eight returning starters on defense were also back with Brandon Deaderick at defensive end, Terrence Cody at nose tackle, Rolando McClain at middle linebacker, Cory Reamer at strongside linebacker, Dont'a Hightower at weakside linebacker, Javier Arenas at left cornerback, Kareem Jackson at right cornerback, and Justin Woodall at safety.

Woodall is listed as free safety. Last year he was the strong safety alongside the graduated Rashad Johnson. Sophomore Mark Barron has moved up to number one at strong safety.

Specialists returning are placekicker Leigh Tiffin, punter (and holder) P.J. Fitzgerald, snapper Brian Selman, and punt and kick return specialist Arenas.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban pointed out that in modern football there are so many different possible personnel groupings that a player not even on the depth chart might be a first team player in a special situation, such as a wide receiver in a four-wide set, or a defensive player in a third down scheme. This depth chart listed only two wide receivers, but had a 12th offensive position, H-Back, where tight ends Brad Smelley, Preston Dial, and Baron Huber were grouped.

There were a few positions where more than one person was listed as the possible back-up.

At quarterback, either Star Jackson or Thomas Darrah is number two behind Greg McElroy. At running back, either Terry Grant or Roy Upchurch is number two behind Mark Ingram. At one wide receiver spot, either Darius Hanks or Earl Alexander is number two behind Marquis Maze. At nose tackle either Kerry Murphy or Nick Gentry is number three behind Cody and Josh Chapman. On punt returns either Maze or Kareem Jackson is three behind Arenas and Julio Jones and at kickoff return either Grant or Richardson is three behind Arenas and McCoy.

Here is the depth chart as released by Coach Nick Saban Monday:
