He took part in last summer's NIKE combine, which was hosted by Alabama. However, Russell was never considered a strong prospect for the Tide under the previous coaching staff.
Until this week, Russell was thought to be leaning to Florida State and LSU, with Tennessee farther behind. Russell had said recently that both in-state schools, Alabama and Auburn, had been crossed off his list.
Since arriving in Tuscaloosa, new Head Coach Mike Price has made it a priority to re-visit and re-recruit the top prospects in the state, whether or not they were leaning to the Tide.
Price is noted for his wide-open, quarterback-friendly offensive schemes. And Russell has obviously taken notice.
It remains to be seen whether the Williamson High School star can be persuaded to stay in-state, but just getting him to Tuscaloosa on an official visit is a small victory for the new coaching staff.
Russell, rated a five-star quarterback by TheInsiders.com network, has said that he will announce his decision on Fox Sports Net South's Countdown to Signing Day, live on February 5th, National Signing Day.
