Notes From Tide Win Over Auburn
Alabama has managed an 8-0 conference record four times (1992, 1994, 2008, and 2009). Florida has done it three times and Tennessee and Auburn once each.
Alabama has now won 16 consecutive SEC regular season games. For the past two years, Bama has won 12 games, the most regular season game wins in Tide history. Twelve wins is one short of the all-time Alabama record of 13 wins in a season, set in 1992 in a national championship season. Bama's 1979 national championship team went 12-0 including a bowl game and the 1994 Tide went 12-1.
Alabama's second consecutive win against Auburn improved Bama's all-time record against the Tigers to 40-33-1.
Alabama played against Auburn with a short week of preparation. Now, though, the Tide gets an extra day over Florida before the SEC Championship Game on December 5 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
Alabama's team was "10 or 15 minutes" late arriving at Jordan-Hare Stadium for Saturday's game against Auburn. The Tide spent Thursday night in Montgomery, Traffic problems on I-85 to Auburn caused the delay.
Javier Arenas became the all-time punt return leader in SEC history Saturday. Arenas returned two punts for 67 yards and now has career return yardage of 1,725 to break the record previously held by Vanderbilt's Lee Nalley, who had 1,695 yards from 1947-49. The NCAA record is 1,751 yards by Texas Tech's Wes Welker. Arenas needs 57 yards in his final two games to become the all-time NCAA leader.
Senior placekicker Leigh Tiffin became the all-time Alabama leadere in field goals. He made two of three against Auburn and now has 80, two more than Philip Doyle had (1987-90). Tiffin broke his own record for points in a season as he moved to 118. He had 111 in 2007 and 106 in 2008 to hold places one through three in Bama history. He also broke his 2007 record of 25 field goals in a season with his 26th and 27th.
Roy Upchurch's touchdown catch for the winning points against Auburn was his first college touchdown pass reception.
Julio Jones caught a career-high nine passes for 83 yards Friday. Four of his catches, for 33 yards, accounted for first downs on Alabama's winning touchdown drive.
Mark Ingram's lackluster day of just 30 rushing yards left him 42 yards behind Bobby Humphrey's Alabama single season record of 1,471 set in 1986.
There has been a question throughout the season whether Mark Ingram might pass from the wildcat formation. Ingram didn't pass from wildcat Saturday, but he did try a halfback pass from the 10. Julio Jones was all alone in the end zone, but Ingram led him too much. Jones' diving effort failed to come up with the ball and it was incomplete. Alabama trailed by a touchdown at the time and had to settle for a field goal.
Safety Mark Barron turned in an interception, his SEC-leading seventh of the season.
When Alabama trailed 14-0, it was the largest deficit the Tide had faced this year. That was because Alabama gave up the longest run it has surrendered this season and the longest pass the Tide has given up this year, both Auburn touchdowns. The 14 first quarter points by Auburn were the most given up by Alabama's defense in a quarter this year.
Three seniors played in their 52nd career games at Alabama, which ties a team record. Punter P.J. Fitzgera.d, offensive guard Mike Johnson, and defensive back Ali Sharrief joined Travis McCall and Nick Walker, who finished last season, and Tarrant Lynch (1990-904).
Alabama captains were offensive guard Mike Johnson, linebacker Rolando McClain, linebacker Cory Reamer, and wide receiver Julio Jones.
