Tide Hosts Power Of Pink Gym Meet

The No. 1 ranked Alabama gymnastics team hosts No. 21 Arizona Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Coleman Coliseum in the Crimson Tide's sixth annual Power of Pink meet. Both teams will put aside their school colors for the night and compete in pink in support of Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson's ongoing breast cancer awareness initiative.

"I think this is probably one of the most rewarding endeavors that I've been involved with," Alabama Coach Sarah Patterson said. "Six years ago I had a vision and I was blessed at that time to be around a group of people that every time I suggested something or wanted to do something they just said, 'Yes, let's do it.'"

Prior to the meet, there will be a check presented to the DCH Breast Cancer Fund, the result of fundraising in the West Alabama community to support the Tide's Power of Pink efforts.

"I could never have envisioned it growing at this pace," Patterson said. "It's been amazing, and Friday night we're going to present a check for $100,000 to the DCH Breast Cancer Fund that was established by Alabama gymnastics in 2004. It will mark a grand total of $850,000 that has been raised to help disadvantaged women in the West Alabama community in the fight against breast cancer."

The Wildcats are no strangers to Coleman Coliseum, having competed in all three Alabama-hosted NCAA Championships, including the last one in 2002. The two teams last met in 2006 in a tri-meet at Penn State.

"Arizona is a great team and for our ladies it's Pac-10 competition, and another top 20 team," Patterson said. "We're just very appreciative that they were able to work it into their schedule to come to here and be a part of this great meet."

In preparation for the meet, the DCH Foundation had a luminary sale this winter and those luminaries will line the front of the Coliseum Friday night. There will be a lighting ceremony at 6:30 p.m. The front of the Coliseum will also be lit in pink thanks to a joint effort by the University of Alabama community and local businesses.

Alabama Athletics' "Power of Pink" sponsor Tuscaloosa Toyota is giving away 5,000 pink t-shirts as well as 5,000 pink shakers at the meet. There will also be a host of pink items given away as well as the every meet prizes such as a 42-inch television, eight $50 gift certificates and much more.

Tickets are still available to the meet and can be purchased through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum, and online at RollTide.com.
