Tide's Morgan SEC Player Of The Week

It's no surprise when Charlotte Morgan is honored for her softball excellence. The Alabama senior from Moreno Valley, California, is a returning All-America who was Southeastern Conference Player of the Year in 2009 and a pre-season All-America and unanimous pre-season All-SEC this year.

Morgan's latest honor is being selected the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week. In Alabama's six games last week (in which Bama posted a 5-1 record), Morgan batted .600 (9-18), scored eight runs, blasted four home runs, slugged three doubles, and drove in 11 runs. Her slugging percentage was 1.600 as seven of her nine hits were for extra bases.

In opening the week at Kentucky, Morgan had two home runs in the first game and one in the second, giving her four home runs in a span of three games.

Alabama split two games with Kentucky, defeated FIU in a mid-week game, and took three games from South Carolina. The Crimson Tide is now 22-7 overall and 6-2 in SEC games and is ranked fifth in one national poll, eighth in another.

This week the Crimson Tide hosts UAB at 6 p.m. CDT Wednesday, then hosts Florida in a key SEC series this weekend. Bama will meet the Gators in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday (televised by ESPN2) and a single game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday (ESPNU).

Alabama is coming off a huge win over South Carolina. In the final game of the series on Sunday, the Tide erupted for a 21-1 victory, tying the program record for runs, margin of victory, home runs (6), and runs in an inning (the Tide scored 14 runs in the second inning against the Gamecocks). For the week, Alabama batted .367 and hit 16 home runs and drove in 44 runs.

In the second win over South Carolina Saturday, Bama Coach Patrick Murphy earned his 600th victory as Bama head coach. That win came in Alabama's 900th game.

In addtion to Morgan being nominated for SEC Player of the Week, Kayla Braud was nominee for Freshman of the Week and junior Kelsi Dunne for Pitcher of the Week.

Braud batted .529 for the week and scored six runs. She also had her first home run, a gand slam, and added a double and triple and driving in seven runs.

Dunne was 3-0 on the week with an earned run average of 0.84. She struck out 27 and walked only one in 16 2/3 innings. Opponents batted only .167.
