Stranded Runners Lead To Tide Loss

Sophomore designated hitter Jon Kelton and sophomore centerfielder Taylor Dugas combined to go 5-for-8 with 3 RBI as the Alabama baseball team pounded out 12 hits Tuesday against the Samford Bulldogs. It wasn't enough, however, as the Crimson Tide fell to the Bulldogs 7-5 at Sewell Thomas Stadium before 3,819.

Alabama (21-12) left 13 runners on base and burned through seven pitchers against Samford (21-10) in the loss.

The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Alabama got the run back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. From there, Samford added one run in the third and fourth innings before a three run assault in the sixth. Alabama cut the margin to 6-5 in the seventh but would get no closer as the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth and held the Tide scoreless over the final two innings.

Junior Brett Whitaker took the loss for Alabama, pitching three innings while surrendering four hits and two runs. He falls to 1-2 on the season.

Alabama is back on the road Wednesday when the Crimson Tide travels to No. 23 Southeastern Louisiana for a 7 p.m. (CDT) game at Pat Kenelly Diamond.
