April Has Been Good To Alabama

The Alabama softball team isn't going to help its national number one RPI ranking this weekend, but the Crimson Tide will be satisfied if it can continue its winning streak.

Alabama, riding a 12-game winning streak, will be in Fayetteville this weekend for a three-game Southeastern Conference series against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Alabama is 36-9 overall and 15-4 in SEC games. The Hogs are 25-21 overall, 8-11 in league games.

The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m. CDT at Arkansas's new Bogle Park. The game will be regionally televised. The series ends with a single game Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Although this was a rebuilding year for Alabama with seven new starters, Crimson Tide Coach Patrick Murphy didn't have a rebuilding schedule. Indeed, the first RPI ranking of the year shows Bama to have played the nation's toughest schedule.

Alabama has seven wins against teams that are currently ranking in the top 15 of the RPI and claims victories over the number two and three ranked teams (Michigan and Florida) in the RPI and are scheduled to play the fifth ranked team, Georgia Tech, later this month in Tuscaloosa. 19 of Alabama's 31 wins this season come against teams ranked in the top 50 of the RPI. Ten of Alabama's last 14 remaining regular season games are against teams ranked in the top 50 of the RPI.

Bama has been particularly good f late with a 12-game winning streak. The Crimson Tide has not lost a game in the month of April. (Since 2007, Alabama softball has a 60-3 record in the month of April.) During the current 12-game winning streak, the Crimson Tide is batting .332 and sports a 1.29 ERA while opponents are hitting at a ..137 clip and have been pounded for a 9.01 ERA. Jennifer Fenton leads the team over the 12 games with a .455 (10 for 22) average and has added a walk-off home run and seven RBI. Fenton has swiped five bags and scored nine runs. Kayla Braud is batting .429 (15 for 35) with a team-leading 15 runs and is a perfect 12 for 12 in stolen bases. In the circle Kelsi Dunne is 8-0 with a 1.03 ERA.. Dunne has struck out 68 in 40 2/3 innings and has held her opponents to a .119 batting average.

Arkansas had a victory over Memphis in a mid-week game to snap a nine-game Razorbacks losing streak.

Alabama and Arkansas have played 45 previous games with Bama holding a 38-7 advantage. Bama has a 23-game winning streak against the Hogs, having not lost since 2002.
