Game Info: 4pm AZ time/ 6pm CT vs UNC. Game will be aired on ESPN. I'll be at ASU baseball tonight but I will be watching softball off my phone and posting highlights (when I'm not driving to the game or posting baseball plays).
UNC Notes: Coming into tonight UNC is 38-19 (14-9 ACC). This is the 14th time the Tar Heels have earned a bid to the NCAA Tourney in program history. They have advanced to the national postseason all-but-three years (2002, 2011, 2014). Carolina is 15-26 all-time in the tourney. They have reached the Regional Final game four times (2005, 2009, 2010, 2012), but have never advanced to the Super Regionals. The Tar Heels have competed in the ACC Softball Championship every year since the inaugural tourney in 1992. Carolina has won at least one game in 21 of 26 tournaments and advanced to the title game for the 5th time in 2017. UNC is 30-40 all time in 26 appearances, including going a perfect 3-0 with back-to-back wins over top-seeded #16 Florida State to capture the 2001 ACC Championship. Since moving to single-elimination in 2008, Carolina has advanced to the Semifinals every season and played in the Championship game in 2011 and 2017, where it fell to Florida State both times. Statistically, UNC is among the best in the nation, ranking 14th in the nation with 59 home runs, 18th with 99 stolen bases, 32nd in runs (293)and 34th in slugging percentage (.462) and double plays (23).
ASU Notes: Devils are making their 13th straight postseason appearance (89-55 all-time in the postseason), after finishing the regular season with a 30-20 record, including 9-15 in Pac-12 play. With this trip to Oxford, ASU is in SEC country for the 3rd straight year. The last time ASU made it out of the Regional round was in 2013 when we hosted in Tempe. The last time the Devils advanced out of a road regional was during the 2010 season but eventually fell to Florida in the Gainesville Super Regional. ASU has been ranked in each of the past four meetings against UNC, including No. 3 in the 7-4 decision in their last meeting on March 2, 2013, in Tempe. #23 UNC fell, 4-3 in 9 innings to #16 ASU on February 24, 2006, in the only meeting in which both teams were ranked (I remember this game very well as I was on the roster). UNC dropped a doubleheader in Tempe in March 1996 in their first-ever meeting. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing what Chelsea Gonzales can do at the plate to add to her 42 career home runs she currently has (6th all-time in ASU history).
The winner of this game will play the winner of #1 Ole Miss vs. #4 SIU Saturday at 11:30AM PT/ 1:30PM CT. The loser will play the loser of Ole Miss vs. SIU Saturday at 2PM PT/4PM CT.
AS ALWAYS, GO DEVILS!!!
