Kelley names ASU as his leader

In recent weeks ASU has stepped up its recruiting efforts with B.J. Kelley, and judging by the Fresno Central wide receiver's comments those overtures could be paying dividends for the Sun Devils. We caught up with Kelley following his recent trip to Tempe to talk about his official visit.

"It was a great visit and I was tempted to commit on my visit," said the 6-2 175 B.J. Kelley who was hosted by ASU wide receiver T.J. Simpson. "This place seems like my type of atmosphere and I was very comfortable out here. The players are great, the coaches are great. I got along with everyone and I could really see myself playing here. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.

"I really like the offense because they throw it a lot and they spread it around to different wide receivers. I know if I come here I will have a chance to catch balls and make plays myself. This offense really brought it yesterday (in the 42-0 win over Washington State) and that's what they do."

Even on a run-oriented 6-2 Grizzlies football team, Kelley has managed to score 11 touchdowns so far this season, and overall has hauled in 38 receptions and 866 yards. Last year he was voted All-Conference as he posted 33 catches for 758 yards and eight touchdowns.

"The Arizona State coaches like my speed (Kelley reported a 40-yard dash marks of 4.43)," Kelley commented, "and how I can create separation from cornerbacks. They like how explosive I am off the ball too. They want an outside speed receiver and that's what I am."

Kelley visited the University of Arizona on September 25th and plans to visit Oregon on November 6th.

"Right now Arizona State is my top school," Kelley noted. "They took the spot away from Oregon because I really liked them on my visit. But I'm not close-minded. I still want to visit Oregon and see what it's like out there, but I really loved it out here (at ASU).

"I don't have any visits planned after Oregon so that's probably my last visit and I will make a decision after that. I'm going to look at academics first and ASU did give a good academic presentation. I want to go to a school where I feel I can play right away and a place that is a good fit for me. I'm going to pray about it, talk to my parents and my coaches about it and then decide. I do want them come out here (to ASU) so they can see what I saw on the visit and see how they feel about it."
