Starter Beau Vaughan gave up four runs in his 4 2/3 innings pitched. Relief pitcher Brett Bordes (1-0) picked up the win after pitching 1/3 of an inning. Carlos Arguello, Bryce Kartler, and Josh Perrault all saw time out of the bullpen.
The Devils pounded out 17 hits and crossed the plate 11 times in the 11-4 victory, but stranded a season high 17 runners on base. Dennis Wyrick led the way with a three for six performance with three RBI's. USC was up 3-2 before the Devils exploded for eight runs in the fourth through sixth innings to take the lead for good.
In the second inning, Wyrick singled to center field, scoring Tuffy Gosewisch and Ryan Bosch. The Devils would add another run in the seventh inning when Travis Buck scored on a throwing error.
The Devils fell to USC 6-5 after the Trojans scored the winning run in the ninth inning. Starter Erik Averill gave up five runs in his six innings of work. Ryan Schroyer (4-2) recorded the loss after pitching 2 1/3 innings.
USC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but ASU would tie it up in the second inning when Travis Buck singled, scoring Andre Ethier. In the fourth inning, Buck would cross the plate off of a Steve Garrabrants double. Garrabrants would later score in the inning. After a 5-3 Trojan lead, the Devils tied up the game in the seventh inning with two runs. USC scored in the bottom of the ninth to win the game when Jeff Clement scored. Dustin Pedroia and Travis Buck lead ASU with three hits apiece.
ASU won the rubber match 7-5 and won their first series against USC at Dedeaux Field since 1993.
Starter Ben Thurmond lasted 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run. Carlos Arguello (1-0) notched the win, and Ryan Schroyer picked up his seventh save on the season.
After the first four innings saw no one score, ASU would go on the board first when Steve Garrabrants scored off of a Travis Buck single. In the sixth inning, Jeff Larish and Mike Guerrero both went deep to give the Devils a 3-2 lead. The Devils would score two runs in the eighth and ninth innings to take a 7-4 lead. Travis Buck and Steve Garrabrants both had three hits on the day to lead ASU.
Next up for ASU is New Mexico on Tuesday at Packard Stadium.
