Devils record statement win

Going into their game with DePaul the Lady Sun Devils knew that in order to stay competitive with high-powered Blue Demons they needed to play solid defense and create easy scores. Mission accomplished as for the first time this year, ASU (7-2) were able to finally get over the hump and defeat #16th ranked DePaul (13-1) 79-66.

With the addition of the new triangle offense that ASU head coach Charlie Turner-Thorne feels implemented, this game was the big stage to be able to see how their offense would match up to DePaul.

In the first half, the Sun Devils started off slow trailing the Blue Demons for the majority of that period. Arizona State allowed DePaul to control the first half by being more aggressive in the paint yet due to the resiliency of the Sun Devils they were able to score easily off of turnovers and play disciplined basketball.

Tied 33-33 at half, the Lady Sun Devils came out of the half extremely confident and ready to open up their offense. Tenaya Watson went 2 for 3 from three-point range, and scored 13 points in the second half alone.

Going into this game Watson made a lobe three pointer all season, but tonight she had 25 points to pace her team, and was effective as well from the free throw line and outstanding on defense. Her presence on the court opened up the passing game immensely and showed what the triangle offense is capable of.

"I just came out and played, and today I was hot!" Watson exclaimed.

Late in the second half, the Sun Devils went on a 16-6 run which changed the momentum of the game for good and took the wind out of DePaul.

As the leader of the team Simon was at her best yet again with a career high performance of 25 points and 7 assists. With Watson relieving the pressure off of Simon, she was able to play at a very high level on both sides of the court as well as be a captain for her team. Simon felt that the key to the victory is "working hard is what we do, that is what the Sun Devils are about."

Next Arizona State hosts Marist December 28 at Wells Fargo Arena and will look to keep the momentum going with their five-game winning streak.
