Cougars rout Devils in Pullman

DeAngelo Casto's 25 points and Klay Thompson's 22 points were indicative of Washington State's torrid shooting night as the hosts cruised to a 78-61 victory over Arizona State.

Washington State (14-5, 4-3 Pac-10) was already nursing a double digit lead, 22-12, midway through the first half and led by as much as 16 points in that period. Arizona State (9-9, 1-5) was able to bring down the lead shooting 7-19 beyond the arc and trailed 41-31 at the half.

The Cougars shifted out of their zone defense in the second stanza and consequently the Sun Devils shot just 26 percent from the field in the last 20 minutes. The hosts enjoyed a comfortable lead the rest of the way sending the visitors to their fourth consecutive Pac-10 loss.

Ty Abbott paced ASU with 16 points, including five three-pointers. Jamelle McMillan was the only other Sun Devil in double figures with 10 points. Rihards Kuksiks led his team with five assists. The freshman duo of Keala King and Jordan Bachynski turned in some encouraging performances. King had a team-high and career-high of eight rebounds, while Bachynski had six rebounds and five blocks in only 20 minutes of play.

ASU was out rebounded 41-34, but did corral 12 offensive boards. The Sun Devils committed just nine turnovers but were ultimately doomed by their inability to stop the Cougars who shot at a 52 percent clip tonight.

To say that the road doesn't get easier for ASU would be an understatement, as they face a quick turnaround for a 1 pm contest Saturday at Seattle against Washington. The Sun Devils are expecting to get back Carrick Felix, Brandon Dunson and Associate Head Coach Dedrique Taylor who all missed tonight's game due to illness.
