Devils Win Round One of Pac-10 Tourney

In the first round of the 2011 Pacific Life Pac-10 Basketball Tournament, the Arizona State Sun Devils( 20-9) played in Los Angeles' Staples Center against the Oregon State Beavers (9-21). With perhaps their NCAA tournament invite on the line, the Sun Devils prevailed and won 50-44.

The first half the Devils were able to score very easily on the smaller Beaver team. Becca Tobin set the mood for the ball game as she was able to score underneath the basket as she has all year with the help of good ball movement. The Devils rebounded the ball well, taking away second chance shots from the Beavers as they out played the Beavers in almost every aspect of the game in the first half. The Devils led at the half 27-20.

The Devils looked to finish the game and advance in the Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament and with the Dymond Simon they did exactly that. The senior who has led the squad the entire year, was able to make the plays needed to win the ball game. Leading the team with 13 points and 3 steals she also helped the team by rebounding when she was able to. Complimenting Simon was her two fellow seniors who also earned Pac-10 honors Tenaya Watson who had 9 points and Becca Tobin with 8 points gashing the Beavers in the post. The ASU defense forced the Beavers to shoot a horrific 15% from the 3 point line as they were forced into their shots helped the Devils take advantage of the game and come out with the victory.

The Devils want to prove that they belong as one of the top teams in the Pac-10 and look to advance in the tournament. The Sun Devils will play the winner the California Golden Bears in the second round of the tournament on Thursday March 10th at 4 pm MT.
