Starter Erik Averill (7-1) suffered his first loss of his young collegiate career while giving up five runs in five innings pitched. The trio of Jered Liebeck, Javy Lopez, and Mark Sopko pitched the last three innings, not allowing a Husky to cross the plate.
ASU took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after Tuffy Gosewisch drove in Steve Garrabrants with a single to center field. After the 1-0 lead, Husky RF Mike Wagner hit two home runs, and Washington scored a total of five runs in the upset win. ASU had just one extra base hit, and left eight men on base. Jeremy West and Andre Ethier extended their hitting streaks to 13 and 12 games respectively, while Dustin Pedroia and Jeff Larish had their streaks snapped.
