Defense dominant in road win at Utah

In college football very few things go as planned, but today at Salt Lake City some predictions did fully materialized. Utah was forced to start JC transfer quarterback Jon Hays for the first time this year and as expected the Sun Devil defense had the upper hand in that matchup forcing the hosts to commit five turnovers en route to a 35-14 ASU win.

The 22nd ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12) had certainly had its issues on the road and the early stage of their contest against Utah (2-3, 0-3) had all the makings of an unpleasant Déjà vu. The hosts scored on their first possession on a John White 30-yard rush touchdown while the Sun Devils sputtered able to muster just 10 points in the first half.

Brock Osweiler connected with Jamal Miles for a 5-yard touchdown and kicker Alex Garoutte connected on a 27-yard field goal with under a minute and half left in the first half.

Yet, it was the ASU defense that was able to not only hold the Utes at bay for most of the game but also forced turnovers that led to Sun Devils scores. An end zone interception by Eddie Elder prevented the hosts form scoring right before the half. A fumble recovery by Greg Smith was capitalized by with a 14-yard touchdown reception by Mile Willie, and A Clint Floyd interception was ultimately the prelude to a Cameron Marshall 4-yard touchdown run.

Those scores along with a two-point conversion reception by Aaron Pflugrad and a Garoutte 35-yard field goal were part of 18 unanswered points in the third quarter, which negated Utah's Dallin Rogers's 2-yard touchdown catch to begin the half and gave the Sun Devils the lead for good.

A Shelly Lyons fumble recovery led to a 12-yard touchdown catch by Mike Willie which capped off the scoring for both teams and secured a precious conference road win for ASU.

Osweiler finished the game 25 of 41 for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Marshall had a quiet day rushing as he collected 47 yards on 21 carries. Gerell Robinson had a career high 101 yards of seven catches and Willie added 98 yards on seven catches.

The maroon and gold will take to the road again next week and face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.
