Devils Blank Cats

The fourth ranked ASU baseball team faced Arizona in the second game of the three game series, and used an 11 run first inning to put the game away early. With the 16-0 win, ASU improved to 49-12 on the season and 15-8 in Pac-10 play.

Freshman starter Erik Averill pitched a solid seven innings, giving up seven hits, but did not let a Wildcat score a run. Mark Sopko came in relief to pitch the eighth and ninth innings in the ASU win.

ASU sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring 11 runs off of eight hits. The first run of the game came off of a Jeremy West single to right field that scored Nick Walsh. A few batters later, Tuffy Gosewisch continued the rally with a double that scored Dennis Wyrick and Travis Buck. Andre Ether would also triple at the end of the inning, which saw Walsh and Dustin Pedroia cross the plate. After the 11-0 lead, Jeff Larish and Ryan Bosch hit their 16th and fifth home runs on the season later in the game.

Jeremy West (17), Andre Ethier (16), and Tuffy Goswisch (8) all extended their hitting streak on the season while having multi-hit games. Pedroia notched his 38th multi-hit game of the year while going two for six with three runs scored. Andre Ethier came within a single of the cycle, going three for five with five RBI's. Dennis Wyrick had one of his better games on the season, going four for five with two doubles.
