ASU Advances to Super Regionals

The first seeded Sun Devils (53-12) capped off the Tempe Regional with a win over second seeded UNLV 16-1. ASU will now face Cal-State Fullerton in the Super Regionals next weekend for the right to play in the College World Series.

Starter Ben Thurmond pitched a solid game, giving up three hits in five innings of work. He earned the win to improve to 8-0 on the year. The bullpen trio of Brett Bordes, Erik Averill, and Ryan Schroyer combined to pitch the last four innings of the game.

ASU took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning after two consecutive bases loaded walks scored Dustin Pedroia and Nick Walsh. Dennis Wyrick then singled to center field, clearing the bases and scoring three. Wyrick would score later in the inning off of a Tuffy Gosewisch single to give the Devils a 6-0 lead. Andre Ethier scored off of a Jeremy West single in the second inning, and Steve Garrabrants scored after Nick Walsh singled down the left field line in the third inning. Jeff Larish hit his 17th home run on the season in the fourth inning over the right field fence to give ASU a 9-0 lead. Pedroia lead off the fifth inning with a triple and scored when Nick Walsh singled to right field. ASU added three more runs in the inning after a Jeff Larish infield hit and two groundouts that scored Walsh and West. Pedroia scored on a wild pitch and Ryan Bosch crossed the plate off of a Jeremy West single to give ASU a 16-0 lead in the sixth inning.

Jeremy West led the way for the Devils with a four for six day with two RBI's. Dustin Pedroia had another solid game going three for five with three runs scored, and was later named the Most Valuable Player of the Tempe Regional. Dennis Wyrick went three for five with three RBI's, and Jeff Larish, Nick Walsh, and Andre Ethier all had two hits apiece. West and Ethier both extended their hitting streaks to 21 and 20 games respectively.
