Thursday's scrimmage is a balanced affair

Every spring practice it seems inevitable that the pendulum of momentum will shift back and forth between offense and defense. Those swings usually occur from day to day or week to week. Yet, tonight at Sun Devil Stadium these predictable shifts took place within the scrimmage itself.

The Arizona State offense began its scrimmage on a torrid pace. Quarterback Michael Eubank connected with Jamal Miles on a 34-yard pass which set up a scoring drive that ended with a four-yard touchdown scamper by James Morrison.

Signal caller Taylor Kelly began the second possession with a 24-yard run as the ground game was all the rage on this drive. Deantre Lewis gained 31 yards on four carries and scored from two yards out.

Not only was Michael Bercovici not upstaged by the other two quarterbacks, but he was a perfect 4-4 for 43 yards which included a nine-yard touchdown toss to Morrison.

The Fourth possession saw Eubank throw an interception as his underthrown ball intended for Rashad Ross was picked off by a leaping Robert Nelson.

After running through typical practice drills for approximately 45 minutes, the team resumed its scrimmage portion of the night. In this segment, Kelly took the reins of the first series and the sophomore had a balanced performance finding Darwin Rogers and Jamal Miles for passes of 17 and 27 yards respectively, while rushing twice for 23 yards. Lewis gained just 12 yards on four rushes, but his last carry was a seven-yard score.

Bercovici kept his torrid pace for a while, completing his first three passes with the second team for 38 yards, but the drive started to stall with a tackle for loss by Rashad Wadood on an attempted reverse by Kevin Anderson. Two of Bercovici's later passes fell incomplete, one of the batted down by Greg Smith.

Eubank did better in his first repetitions of this segment rushing for 31 yards on five carries ending with a nine-yard score, which ultimately was the offense's last touchdown of the scrimmage.

Jordan McDonald's two sacks on both Kelly and Bercovici halted the offense on two separate occasions, a holding penalty nullified a touchdown while Eubank was taking snaps, and a goal line stance which culminated with an Isreal Marshall tackle prevented Kelly from finding pay dirt.

Pass deflections by Smith and Carr (both their seconds of the night) forced Alex Garoutte to kick a 39-yard field goal which he converted. The sophomore was also a perfect 5-5 on his PAT attempts.

The Sun Devils return to practice on Tuesday, April 10th at 4 p.m.
