ASU Recruit Cornell Candidate

The name Canidate is bound to bring unpleasant memories to ASU fans. Arizona's Trung Canidate was a "Sun Devil Killer" each time he played his in-state rival. However, ASU fans can rest assure that his brother Cornell won't carry that same title, since he's one of many local freshman who are part of ASU's 2001 class.

"I didn't follow in the footsteps of my brother Trung and go to U of A, just because I felt that ASU was a better fit for me." Says the Phoenix Alhambra graduate. "It didn't bother me that my brother went there, and it didn't influence my decision. There was no pressure at all from my family or Trung to go to U of A. They all wanted me to go where I would felt best and be most comfortable." Aside from Arizona, there were other schools vying for the services of the running back: "Cal, UCLA, and other Pac-10 schools were recruiting me. I also had SDSU, Nebraska, Michigan." As far as the pressure on which school to pick, Canidate says: "You always are going to get the critics who will tell you what school they want you to go to, because that's what they feel is right. They don't look at the big picture for me."

There were many reasons why the freshman chose to wear the maroon and gold. "Staying close to home was not that important to me. I was very close to committing to Cal. But then I took my trips, evaluated things, and just ended up at ASU. Going to ASU was going to benefit me when I'm done playing Football. The academics at ASU were important to me. The academics at Cal are very good as well, but their Football team hasn't been to any bowls the last few years." When asked about his role with the Devils, Canidate says: "In high school I played safety and other positions besides running back. But I'm happy that ASU recruited me as a running back. My skills on the college level are better suited for running back. I do want to pursue playing on special teams, and be on the kick return and punt return teams. I'm just going in with an open mind. I'll play wherever the coaches want me to play. The Coaches haven't talked to me at all about redshirting or not. I think it's going to be more up to me and how well I do at camp Tontozona. I don't care if I redshirt or not."

Like several ASU recruits this year, Canidate is blessed with speed." My strengths are speed, quickness, vision, and power. Some people talk about my size, but that doesn't matter to me. My role model is Warrick Dunn (running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers). He's doesn't even weigh 190 pounds. I know I can play with my size. There always things I can improve on. Blocking is one of them. I really put some work in that area in my senior years. I was ripping some heads off there (smile)."

It is very common trend for several generations of Football players and their siblings to attend the same school. Ex-Sun Devils Danny White and Todd Heap are perfect examples of that. In Cornell Canidate's case, ASU fans are more than happy to see that trend discontinue. It's time for another player from the Canidate family to write his own chapter in Arizona's College Football History, but this time it will be for Arizona State.

Person you most admire My mom. She's such a great motivator. I can't even describe it.

First Football Memory I was seven and I scored my first touch down in Pop Warner. I wanted to see if Football is something that I really wanted to do. I saw my brothers playing, and I didn't know how it was going to be for me. When I scored that first touchdown, I heard the crowd calling my name. I was like how my goodness, this is fun!

One Thing most people don't know about me I'm actually quiet person, even though I may come off outgoing.

Why did you choose ASU? The coaches kept it real for me.

Where do you want to be in ten years? I would like to be in the NFL. If that doesn't work out, just be working at a desk. No manual labor!
